George Sand

“First Modern, Liberated Woman”

It was Noel Bertram Gerson who put it best with the title of his book, George Sand: First Modern, Liberated Woman. Her real name was
Aurore Amadine Lucile Dupin and she was married to Casimir Dudevant who later died and leaving her with two children, Maurice and Solange. Sand was a prolific writer who advocated for equality through the lives of the heroines in her numerous novels. She wrote about the conflicts and challenges of the relationships between men and women as well as contradictions of these relationships in society and politics. She wrote about strong, dynamic women who weren’t afraid to think and act differently, women who had affairs outside of marriage.

Sand’s life was just as scandalous and revolutionary as her writings. A feminist as heart, she not only wrote about her views and ideas but also she acted upon them, unlike other female writers who wrote about freedom and remained tied to the constraints, norms and standards of their society. She was notorious for smoking cigars and dressing like a man as well as for her numerous affairs with famous figures which include the poet Alfred Musset, the novelist Prosper Mérimée and the famous composer Fédéric Chopin. She was a radical; when her relationship with Musset came to ruins, she cut off her hair and sent it to him in a skull. Sand mirrored her real life in her novels and the lives of her heroines.

With her very blunt approach to life she managed to show others what they could not see for themselves. Not only did she fight for equality among men and woman but she embodied the spirit of liberty, equality and feminism. Her directness and her courage gave strength and inspiration to many generations of female writers. She was a radical but she did it with style, sensibility and elegance. She saw something wrong in her society that very few people could she and she took it upon herself to tell it to the world in a way that would shock her society into change. She refused to her society’s views and one-sided justice, making her the “First Modern, Liberated Woman.”
